Cornwall YFC members become Barbour Apprentices of the Season

Sisters-in-law, Sarah Hawkey, 27, and Danni Hawkey, 26, have both been appointed as the Barbour Apprentice of the Season for October 2017. Nominated by The Prince’s Countryside Fund, and the Cornwall YFC to which they belong, the girls both won a Barbour outfit to help keep them warm and dry in their work.
Danni said: “This apprenticeship allows me to be able afford the training to help with my future career in farming and allows me to do what I love in a safer and a more practical way. Now, a typical day can include foot trimming, vaccinating and worming, and shearing ewes ready for lambing – it’s great.”
Sarah added “It means a lot to me to be involved with The Prince’s Countryside Fund as I really feel the work that I do will contribute to making the countryside a much better place in the future. I felt that this was an ideal stepping stone into the farming industry and it has enabled me to follow a career that I have always been passionate about.”
Barbour has supported the Fund since 2012, and in 2016 launched the Apprentice of the Season to recognise young people entering the industry. Dame Margaret Barbour said: “The Barbour Apprentice of the Season recognises and encourages young people who are really making a difference in the countryside and I know that their Barbour clothing will keep them well protected over the winter months.”
Claire Saunders, Director of The Prince’s Countryside Fund, said: “We’re delighted to help Danni and Sarah continue their careers in agriculture, and are thrilled to be able to support them as they learn new skills – we look forward to following their success. Our partnership with Barbour allows us the opportunity to encourage and inspire more young people to consider a career in the British countryside, and make a real difference to their local community.”
